The duration of an EcoVadis assessment largely depends on a company’s CSR maturity, size, and the availability of supporting documentation.
It is important to clearly distinguish between two different timelines:
- internal preparation time (upstream),
- and the official EcoVadis timeline, which only covers questionnaire submission and analysis.
The EcoVadis review process itself takes an average of 6 to 8 weeks, excluding document preparation.
Key stages of the EcoVadis assessment process
The assessment follows several steps, but not all of them are part of EcoVadis’ official timeline.
1. Evidence preparation (variable duration, outside EcoVadis timeline)
This phase corresponds to the company’s internal work before submission.
It involves:
- Identifying existing documents: CSR policies, codes of conduct, procedures, action plans, KPIs, certifications.
- Checking EcoVadis compliance: scope coverage, validity dates, level of formalization.
- Completing the company profile (sector, workforce, assessment scope).
Key point:
The duration of this phase depends entirely on the company’s starting point. It can range from a few weeks for organizations with a structured CSR system, to several months for less mature companies that need to formalize policies, define KPIs, or build action plans.
2. Questionnaire submission (a few days)
Once documents are ready, the company completes the EcoVadis questionnaire, which is tailored to its size, sector and country.
Each answer must be supported by one or more documents, up to a maximum of 55 files.
After submission, the file is locked and sent for analysis.
3. Review by EcoVadis analysts (1 to 8 weeks depending on company size)
The review timeline varies mainly based on company size:
- XS companies: ~ 1 week
- S / M / L companies: 6 to 8 weeks
EcoVadis analysts assess policies, actions and results across four themes: Environment, Labor & Human Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement.
The evaluation is based on objective criteria: completeness, quality of evidence, relevance and data freshness.
A quality control review is then conducted before final score validation.
4. Score publication and feedback (a few days)
Once the assessment is completed, the company receives a full scorecard, including:
- An overall score out of 100 points,
- A score per theme,
- Sector benchmarking,
- Strengths and improvement areas.
The score is valid for 12 months and can be shared with one or multiple business partners through the EcoVadis platform.
What really impacts the overall timeline
Several factors influence the total duration:
- Initial CSR maturity level, especially the existence of formalized documents.
- Quality of document preparation, as complete files are reviewed faster.
- Organizational complexity, particularly for multi-site or group structures.
- EcoVadis workload, depending on the time of year.
- Language and document format, as non-compliant files may slow down the review.
Our recommendation:
If documents already exist, 3–4 weeks of preparation may be sufficient.
If everything needs to be structured, several months should be anticipated — well before receiving the EcoVadis invitation.
