VSME Consultant: Guiding Your SME to ESG Compliance

VSME is the voluntary ESG reporting framework designed by EFRAG for SMEs. A VSME consultant helps structure data, prioritise actions and document compliance with rigour and pragmatism — without administrative overload.

What is a VSME consultant?

A VSME consultant supports small and medium-sized businesses in implementing the VSME (Voluntary Sustainability Reporting Standard for SMEs), developed by EFRAG. This simplified framework helps SMEs structure their ESG practices around 56 core indicators. The consultant translates these requirements into a clear, realistic method tailored to the company's size, sector and resources.

This is not an auditor role — VSME requires no external verification. The consultant's job is to help build the reporting structure, collect relevant data and turn reporting into a strategic lever.

Good to know: VSME is 100% voluntary — no format, audit or deadline is imposed. It can be adopted at any time and built up progressively.

Why ESG compliance is a strategic priority for SMEs

ESG compliance is driven by growing market pressure: large companies subject to CSRD require reliable ESG data from their SME suppliers to complete their own reporting. VSME provides a standardised, recognised response to these requests.

Adopting VSME also improves access to finance: banks and investors now integrate ESG criteria into their risk assessments and credit conditions. The framework also enables clearer internal management of CSR objectives and greater transparency with stakeholders.

Initial diagnosis: the VSME consultant's first mission

The consultant starts with an ESG diagnostic to assess the company's current practices. They identify data already available — energy, HR, governance — and compare it against the VSME Basic module's 56 datapoints covering environmental, social and governance pillars.

This assessment maps gaps, prioritises actions and establishes a progressive compliance plan. The consultant may also recommend a double materiality analysis, useful for aligning ESG priorities with overall strategy.

Good to know: Double materiality, while not mandatory, identifies both the company's impacts on society and the ESG risks that affect its financial performance.

Structuring the approach: action plan and reporting

After the diagnosis, the consultant designs an ESG roadmap tailored to the SME's maturity level:

  • Define ESG governance: assign internal roles, integrate into management.
  • Establish policies and procedures: select indicators, set targets and track progress.
  • Prepare and structure reporting in EFRAG-recommended formats (Excel, XBRL or PDF summary).
  • Train teams in data collection and evidence documentation.

The consultant can leverage specialist tools like Ditto, which automates collection, structures indicators and simplifies report writing according to European standards.

Ongoing support and continuous improvement

The consultant's role does not end with the first report. They support the SME in annual data updates, target adjustments and evidence consolidation. This pragmatic approach embeds ESG reporting into the company's management cycle rather than treating it as a one-off obligation.

Good to know: A well-structured VSME report can be prepared in a week from existing data — especially data already used for EcoVadis or carbon footprint assessments.

Costs, benefits and stakeholder perception

The investment in a VSME approach is limited and proportionate: a few days of work, possibly supported by an external consultant or a platform like Ditto. In return, the SME gains credibility, secures commercial relationships and improves access to financing.

The ROI is largely intangible: stronger reputation, simplified client responses, preparation for future CSRD obligations, and increased employee engagement around a shared sustainability project.
