SBTi
Science Based Targets initiative
The SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative) checks and validates companies' greenhouse gas reduction targets against what climate science says is needed to limit warming to 1.5°C.
It was founded in 2015 by CDP, the UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and WWF. A company commits, submits its targets, and the SBTi validates them against its criteria and publishes them.
Near-term targets cover 5 to 10 years and must include scope 3 when it represents a large share of emissions. The Corporate Net-Zero Standard adds a long-term target: deep reductions across the value chain, then neutralizing the residual emissions. Customers increasingly ask suppliers whether they have validated targets, notably through CDP.
