Scope 3 for electronics manufacturers: getting component data from suppliers

Purchased components are the largest line in an electronics footprint, and the data belongs to suppliers who mostly don't have it. How to run the request as a campaign.

A tray of components crosses your goods-in bench having already spent nearly everything it will ever emit. The cleanrooms, the high-purity gases and the hundreds of process steps are behind it. Your soldering line will add very little.

That is why an electronics footprint is won or lost on one line. The GHG Protocol files purchased goods under scope 3, category 1, and in this industry the category does not merely lead, it leaves everything else far behind: printed circuit boards, connectors, displays and enclosures each arrive with their own embodied burden on top of the semiconductors. Your own assembly, testing and packing sit in scopes 1 and 2, are worth measuring cleanly from the meters, and will not move the total.

The awkward part is structural. The largest share of your footprint was emitted in factories you have never seen, by suppliers who mostly have not measured it either, and who are receiving the same email from their customers that you are receiving from yours.

Estimate first, then ask the few who matter

The reflex on discovering that the data belongs to suppliers is to survey all of them. Resist it. A four-hundred-supplier questionnaire produces a trickle of unusable answers and a reputation for spam, and it burns the goodwill you will need next year.

Work in the opposite order. Build the first version of category 1 from your own records: spend by supplier and by component family from the accounting export, multiplied by monetary factors, ADEME's Base Empreinte or Ecoinvent for the international chains. The result is imprecise, you should say so in the report, and it does the one thing you need first. It ranks. Electronics purchasing concentrates, and a modest number of suppliers will usually carry most of the estimated emissions.

Those suppliers, and only those, get the request. Every hour spent on the tail is an hour taken from the head of the list.

Ask for little, precisely

The campaign email that works is short and answerable. Three requests, in descending order of ambition:

  1. Your company-level footprint, scopes 1, 2 and 3, with the year and the method.
  2. Product-level carbon data for the references we buy, if you have it. Some large component makers now publish product carbon footprints; most suppliers do not, and a company-level figure with revenue lets you allocate honestly in the meantime.
  3. If you have neither, when? A date is an answer. It feeds next year's campaign and tells purchasing which relationships to develop.

Ask for the method behind any figure every time: which standard, which factor database, which year. Supplier numbers you cannot place methodologically cannot be compared or safely summed, and mixed-method category 1 totals are how a footprint drifts into fiction while looking more precise every year.

Good to know: distributors sit between you and many component makers, and the good ones are turning carbon data into a service, aggregating manufacturer figures for the references they sell. Before writing to forty component makers individually, ask your two or three main distributors what they can already provide.

Make it a campaign, not correspondence

A campaign has a list, a deadline, a reminder cycle and a place where answers land. Correspondence has none of those, which is why it produces a folder of PDFs nobody can total. Route it through the supplier-management process purchasing already runs for quality documents and REACH declarations, so carbon becomes one more line in an existing relationship rather than a stranger asking favors. Purchasing should sign the request, because suppliers answer buyers.

Record everything, including the silences. "No data, committed to 2027" is campaign output, not a failure. Next year's campaign starts from this year's table, asks the committed suppliers to deliver, and moves one more tier of the ranking from monetary estimate to declared data.

So run the first campaign narrow and finish it, rather than running a wide one that never closes. The ratchet is slow, a few suppliers a year, but it compounds, and it improves your own answer to the customer whose email started all of this.

Why is scope 3 category 1 so large for electronics manufacturers?

Because semiconductor fabrication and component manufacturing are energy-intensive, and those emissions arrive embodied in every purchased part. Cleanrooms, high-purity gases, and hundreds of process steps sit upstream of a bill of materials, so purchased components typically outweigh a manufacturer's own assembly operations many times over.

How do you get carbon data from electronics suppliers?

Rank suppliers first using a monetary estimate built from your own purchasing data, then ask only the largest contributors. Request their company-level footprint with method and year, product-level data only if it exists, or a committed date otherwise. Route the request through purchasing as a single campaign with a deadline and reminders.

What if suppliers have no carbon data at all?

Expect it: most do not yet. Keep those supplier lines on monetary factors, record the refusal or the committed date, and re-ask next year. A supplier committing to measure by a given date is a useful campaign outcome, and repeated campaigns move the biggest lines from estimate to declared data a few suppliers at a time.
